Perfect Evening

April 29, 2008

This evening is absolutely perfect. It was a so-so day that the ever accurate metetologist said would be amazing. Their predictions came true about 5pm. The sun broke through the clouds, it was neither hot nor cold, the sky was a crisp blue. It was perfect.

We had a nice dinner and the girls got to spend about an hour outside. Monkey Girl watered flowers and Little Monkey got very, very wet. “It helps her grow” claimed Monkey Girl.

After bath and bedtime, I went outside to check the mail box. (we live in a new community and the mail boxes are all clustered at the end of the block) The sun started to set as I stepped outside to the calming smell of trees in bloom. I felt like I was in another part of the country, one I like. It was lovely.

I dilly dallied down to the mail box, stopped myself when I started to walk in my normal brisk pace. I couldn’t bear to go back in so I took out the trash and recycling and decided to sweep out the garage. My husband came out to check on me because I was out for so long. “We’re supposed to sweep the garage. Geez, when do the chores stop?” was his input on the evening.

Unfortunately, tomorrow a storm is coming in and we won’t have another evening like this for a week or so. I bet the blossoms will be gone by then - blown away by the wind, battered by the impending snow. (yes, snow)

I lived in DC years ago and my favorite time of the year was when the cherry blossoms were in bloom. I would visit daily but often went in the evening. The crowds were thin and the smell took over my body. There was something magically about walking through those trees with the sun creeping to bed. The moonlight reflects off the petals. Every year, I intend to make a trip to see the blossoms. We have been gone 6 years and I only made it back once. Maybe next year will be the year.

At least I have tonight…
